Album Review: Did DaBaby Deliver On His Album ‘KIRK’

DaBaby-Album-Review

DaBaby has been making some noise in the rap community lately! Tracks such as “Suge” and “Baby Sitter feat. Offset” have staked their claim to fame amongst fans and are becoming some of the most popular tracks in the nation. Both of these tracks were seen on his album Baby on Baby, released back in March 2019.

Well, guess what? DaBaby is back and better than ever with his new album KIRK!

Dropped on September 27th, KIRK is an excellent sophomore album for DaBaby for a multitude of reasons. To start, he begins to really open up to fans on this record. He truly shows everyone that he can go much deeper than any of his previous outputs. On tracks such as “INTRO” and “GOSPEL,” he talks about the death of his father, how it affected his life while rising to fame, and ultimately shaping him as an artist. It’s a crazy change from what we usually see from DaBaby, but he makes sure to include his signature loud and gritty sound. Tracks such as “BOP” and “REALLY” feature some loud 808s and hard verses that do a great job of reminding you that you are listening to track by DaBaby. The album is full of bangers, but this turns out to be somewhat of a double-edged sword as it goes on.

Sitting at 13 tracks, the songs all start to kind of meld together after a while. Tracks such as “VIBEZ,” “REALLY,” and “THERE HE GO” all begin to sound like the same loud, 808-heavy song with a typical DaBaby flow (already heard on tracks such as “Suge” and “Baby feat. Lil Baby”). Honestly, this doesn’t take too much away from the album. The features from Moneybagg Yo, Chance the Rapper, Nicki Minaj, Stunna 4 Vegas, and Migos keep the vibe banging and do add to the album (these performances help save these tracks). Unfortunately, other artists on the album (Lil Baby, Gucci Mane, and Kevin Gates) fall through. Why? It’s mostly due to the length of their performances. They start off strong but quickly begin to show the cracks and flaws in their raps. So, the other features end up being even more impressive (Chance and Moneybagg Yo), completely dominating their verses and keeping their songs energized as well as exciting to listen to.

Although the album starts to feel somewhat like a chore to listen to, overall, it is still a fun project and keeps a good vibe. The tracks manage to stay hyped, while still adding a layer of depth to DaBaby’s music. He talks about his struggles adjusting fame after the death of his father, and how it changed the course of his career as he began to blow up. There are plenty of standout features, particularly from Stunna 4 Vegas, Chance the Rapper, Nicki Minaj, and Moneybagg Yo, and they help keep the album fresh and fun.
