California Introducing 3D-Printed Homes In The Rancho Mirage Area

LA 3D PRINTED HOMES

In the 21st century, it feels like housing is the most difficult expense to deal with. Prices are upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars for houses that are barely up to par. In California, people are working towards creating houses that are not only somewhat affordable for the area, but sustainable, as well.

Palari Group, a real estate developer all about sustainability, is teaming up with Mighty Buildings, a homebuilding service, to build a total of 15 3D-printed homes on five acres of land in California’s Rancho Mirage area. This venture has $15 million behind it, with the goal of “creat[ing] beautiful, affordable, and sustainable homes [with] zero net energy.” The 3D-printing process will help get rid of construction waste, so the houses are definitely sustainable. Yet, with prices starting at $595,000, affordability (for most) is practically out of the question.

Palari Group’s Founder & CEO, Basil Starr, said the 3D-printed houses will play a part in “transforming the way we build homes of the future.” Starr continued by saying “3D printing allows us to build faster, stronger, and more efficiently, making it integral to our platform of streamlining home-building processes centered on sustainability of construction, materials, and operations.”

Each solar-powered property will come with a 1,450 square-foot home; buyers will be given the option of a 700 square-foot secondary home. The houses will be built with both 3D-printing and robotic automation, removing the need for construction workers to operate heavy machinery. They are stylized like modern homes, with floor to ceiling windows and a rectangular design.

As of August 2020, the average price for housing in California stands at $706,900. One could say the houses are somewhat affordable for the area, but not for those making an average wage. The goal of sustainable housing is commendable, but the steep prices mean that it will be harder to afford, defeating the purpose for everyone aside from the rich and wealthy.

As these 3D-printed houses begin to pop up, hopefully they are able to usher in a new era of sustainability. Would you live in a 3D-printed house, or would you rather stay in something classic?
