Fashion & Streetwear Icon Virgil Abloh Passes Away At 41

virgil abloh rest in peace

2021 has been a tough year for the culture. We lost a number of talented creatives, and Virgil Abloh was most definitely one of the greats. Abloh pioneered Off-White and became one of the biggest brands (and creative figures) in the streetwear community. Prior to his passing, he was working to add that same flair to Louis Vuitton.

The fashion pioneer passed on November 28th, 2021 after a battle with cancer that he decided to keep private. Abloh’s family released a statement that morning that read: “We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues. For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture. Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations. We thank you all for your love and support, and we ask for privacy as we grieve and celebrate Virgil’s life. Virgil Abloh: September 30, 1980 – November 28, 2021”

Abloh was an inspiration to and for many, inspiring the birth of brands, designers, and culture connoisseurs across the world. Creatives around the world have been paying their respects on social media and through other various outlets.

This one hurts. Virgil Abloh was the last person I would have expected to lose this year, and I hope that his family is able to properly grieve. As AUDIBLWAV was coming up in 2019, Off-White and Abloh’s other fashion ventures played a major role in how we formulated some of our content, helping turn our creative gears along with millions of others.

Rest in peace Virgil. Thank you for inspiring people across the world to chase their creative endeavors without fear.
