Future and Lil Uzi Vert Double Up With “Patek” and “Over Your Head”

future and lil uzi vert new singles

Lil Uzi Vert’s birthday just passed, closing off the month of July. Now, one of his wishes—working with Future—was recently granted with two new singles. Future and Lil Uzi have collaborated on tracks in the past, including “All Bad” and “Wassup,” the latter of which was featured on Uzi’s long-awaited Eternal Atake album. The pair continues to keep things moving with their new singles “Patek” and “Over Your Head.”

“Patek” and “Over Your Head” were both released on July 31st. Generation Now initially teased the tracks on their social media—although, fans believed the two were going to release a collaborative project. Despite their beliefs, the two singles hit streaming services late during the day.

Before diving into the rappers’ roles on each track, it’s important to take a look at the production. On “Patek,” Starboy and Brandon Finessin work to create a beat that aligns with the trap sound prevalent in today’s music, utilizing 808s, kicks, and hi-hats. This gives Uzi and Future free range to perform on the track, using its quick tempo to rap about a number of different things pertaining to their fame. “Over Your Head” also takes a trap route in terms of production, albeit less traditional. The track is fast-paced, but D. Hill mixes the 808s and kicks in a way that hones in on a melancholic sound that’s becoming increasingly popular in today’s music. The production on each song paves the way for both rappers to vocalize the feelings embedded in the beats.

“Patek” takes the traditional trap route, with Uzi and Future both using their well-known flows to bring the track together. As the track begins, they bounce off each other before Uzi takes over—spitting fast and passionate bars that are complemented by the beat. He raps for the first half of the track before letting Future come in. As Future enters his verse, he continues with a similar flow before switching into his traditional, slowed-down sound; staying consistent throughout. On “Patek,” the two rappers rap about the luxuries and lifestyle choices that come with fame, including high-end fashion and fast cars. The track is not particularly profound in terms of lyricism, but it still works to create a sound that glorifies the rapper lifestyle.

“Over Your Head” also takes the traditional trap approach, albeit more subtly. On this track, Lil Uzi Vert lives up to his name with fast bars that are akin to a little uzi. He keeps the speed high for the entire duration of his verse, allowing Future to slow it down again. Both artists rap about a number of different things on the track, covering the lives they live while also keeping focus on both positives and negatives. Throughout the song, they rap about their luxuries and all the pressures associated with the lifestyle. We know that both rappers have a larger-than-life persona, yet they still deal with human struggles— people who only want to use them. They also touch on how these people impact their future relationships, making it harder to trust the ones who actually mean well.

On “Patek” and “Over Your Head,” Lil Uzi Vert and Future show how well they work together, with their flows complementing each other nicely. The production also helps to strengthen each track, with Brandon Finessin, Starboy, and D. Hill working to accentuate the traditional trap sound in various ways. The tracks are good additions to each artists’ discography—both helping to bring their unique, enjoyable flows to the table and keeping up consistency throughout.

We are definitely excited to see more work from these two artists in the future, maybe even a collaborative project. Are you excited, or do you think they could do better? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comment section.
