Lil Yachty’s All-Gender Nail Company Breaks The Mold

Lil Yachty has been doing everything to make 2021 his year, and he’s doing it right. Not only has he teamed up with artists like Lucki on “Greed” and a host of Michigan rappers on his mixtape Michigan Boy Boat. Following the release of Michigan Boy Boat, Yachty has plans to venture into nails with Crete, his new all-gender polish brand.

The Atlanta rapper announced the venture via Instagram earlier this month, uploading a photo of him holding the polish with the caption “I’d like to introduce my new nail paint line @crete_co….FIRST COLOR DROP MAY 21. 4 ALL GENDERS. FOR YOU, NOT THEM!” The nail polish lineup just dropped and features various shades of black, white, and grey.

As evidenced in a statement by Lil Yachty for Complex, the brand was partially-inspired by 17-year-old Trevor Wilkinson, who was suspended from his high school in West Texas for wearing nail polish back in December 2020). Yachty expressed his discontent by saying “If someone wants to express themself in any type of way, as long as it’s not harming anyone or bringing anyone down, they should be allowed to do so. You shouldn’t be punished or tormented for being you.” Although the brand was already in the works prior to Wilkinson’s situation, fuel was added to the fire as Yachty got news of it.

Yachty aspires to help make polish more of a norm for men, saying “It’s essentially like, unisex, but I want it to be more focused on for men to use it, and to be more comfortable in their own skin. Bro, it’s 2020, you know what I’m saying? It’s about to be 2021—come on, what are barriers? We still have barriers?” It’s great to see a rapper venturing into nails, as the genre is known for its hyper-masculinity. Hopefully this pushes other rappers to expand their horizons and break the traditional, stereotypical mold of a rapper.
