Lucki and Lil Yachty Finally Drop Long-Awaited “Greed”

Lucki has been one of the biggest underground rappers to date—it’s about time he gets some mainstream recognition. After months of teasing, the Chicago rapper has teamed up with Lil Yachty for their new “Greed” track.

Released on February 11th, the track features spacey production filled with synths, 808s, kicks and other instruments (courtesy of Cardo and Maajei Vu). Coming in at a runtime of 1:36, “Greed” is only a brief taste of what the two have to offer as a team, which is ironic due to its title. Despite the short runtime, both are able to bring out their best sounds, making for a fun, brief performance.

A sample from 1992’s Candyman plays, as the track opens, leading into Lucki’s chorus. His style melds well with the beat—showing off soft back-to-back bars that match the kicks and synths. He sets the stage for Yachty to enter, who does so with ease. As he comes in, Yachty picks up where Lucki left off—opting for the same quick back-to-back flow. Unfortunately, his verse ends quickly.

With the short runtime of the track, the verses leave a little bit more to be desired. There aren’t any issues with either performance—yet, with all the hype, we were expecting something more robust. This doesn’t prove to be detrimental to “Greed,” as both rappers are accustomed to short tracks. In fact, they pack bars into the 30 seconds they are allotted, making for a tune that keeps the listener coming back.

Despite the short runtime, “Greed” is still a great track. As the year continues to progress, hopefully Lucki sees more mainstream features and begins to further carve out his lane. The rapper has been well established in the underground rap scene for some time now; it’s only right that he gets a seat at the table in 2021.
