Lucki’s “Almost There” Mixtape Review

lucki almost there mixtape

Lucki has been consistently feeding his fans since his rise to fame back in 2013. And, his latest mixtape, Almost There, does not disappoint.

Released just seven months after Days B4 III, Almost There sits at 12 tracks of just Lucki. The lack of features seemingly inflates the runtime, but the mixtape only comes in at 26 minutes. Luckily, it’s a full 26 minutes of bars that are introspective, relatable, and sound laid back and soothing to the ear.

The Chicago native gathered a notable crew of underground producers on Almost There, including BRENTRAMBO, Plu2o Nash, and StoopidXool (all putting in work on their respective tracks). They have all worked together in the past, proven by the chemistry on each track. Songs such as “Ouch Omen” and “Pure Love – Hate,” produced by StoopidXool and BRENTRAMBO, feature strong and smooth kicks, with hi-hats and other various instruments. The synths in “Pure Love – Hate” are a bit in your face, which accentuates Lucki’s raps. This sort of amplifying effect couples well with Lucki’s introspective bars to create an enjoyable listening experience.

Lucki’s bars on this tape are standard for his caliber; the Chicago rapper dives into his experiences with drugs and the ways they have altered his life. He also touches on past encounters and moving forward, especially on “Prada Tune” and “Faith” (the latter initially being released as a single in late April). “Prada Tune” features the underground legend rapping about the ones who are proud of him for everything he’s accomplished, and how his money and fame helped him cope with the struggles he dealt with on the pathway to fame. While “Prada Tune” reflects on the struggles of his past, “Faith” reflects on the struggles of his present, with lines alluding to drugs used to help cope with his issues. Lucki’s bars on Almost There don’t intertwine to create a fluid story but are focused on his personal experiences, making its mixtape status known. Its status does not pollute the listening experience at all; Lucki’s veteran rhymes are still a joy.

There is not much to complain about on Lucki’s Almost There. Although there are a few questionable instruments on the track “Runnin With,” the Chicago rapper’s bars make up for it. This mixtape does not have an overall message like other projects (it’s more of a collection of songs). With all of this in mind, Almost There is a good project! It’s got solid songs throughout (courtesy of BRENTRAMBO and StoopidXool) as well as flawless bars from the underground legend.

Almost There is a great addition to Lucki’s ever-growing discography, bringing together various tempos and instances that evoke strong emotions. It’s clear that this is just the warm-up for Lucki. The mixtape earns an 8.5/10, with the most notable tracks being “Tarantino,” “Pure Love – Hate,” and “Faith.”
