New York City has spawned some of the biggest rappers in recent memory, with the godfather of them all being the late Notorious B.I.G (real name: Christopher Wallace). The legendary rapper helped put the city on the map, and was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his contribution to music. Following his induction, a new documentary on his life has been announced and is scheduled for a March release.

Set to arrive on March 1st, Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell will cover the New York rapper’s life as a whole, rather than keeping him in the box of rap. In a statement about the film, Netflix said “In the wake of the Notorious B.I.G.’s landmark induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and ahead of what would have been his 50th birthday, Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell offers a fresh look at one of the greatest, most influential rappers of all time by those who knew him best.” They continued by saying “Made in collaboration with Biggie’s estate, I Got A Story To Tell is an intimate rendering of a man whose rapid ascent and tragic end has been at the center of rap lore for more than twenty years. This intimate documentary features rare footage filmed by his best friend Damion ‘D-Roc’ Butler and new interviews with his closest friends and family, revealing a side of Christopher Wallace that the world never knew.”

Spearheading this project are Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, and Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, who both serve as the executive producers. Biggie’s former manager, Wayne Burrow, serves as one of the film’s producers, as well. When talking about the film to Rolling Stone, Burrow, who also manages the late rapper’s estate, said “Mama Wallace and I had a conversation about creating the first Estate sanctioned documentary about BIG’s life and the initial thought was to have the story told from the perspective of his fans globally and how they were inspired by him and his music.” After years of development, the idea to interview those closest to the late rapper was fleshed out.

This extensive development was something touched on by director Emmett Malloy, as the documentary was initially announced in 2017 as One More Chance. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Malloy said “The running joke about documentary films is often how long they take to make. This film lived up to all those stereotypes, taking us four years to develop and make it. Through those years, we were immersed in Brooklyn in the 70s through the 90s. It is easy to see how much Brooklyn has changed since Christopher Wallace was a kid, but it’s also clear that many things about being a young black man in this country have not changed.”

Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell is set to tell the story of one of the biggest rappers of all time in a fresh, new way. Rather than taking the traditional route of only talking to people about how his life impacted them, Malloy, Combs, Wallace and the rest of the crew are making sure people remember Biggie the way they do.

As the March 9th anniversary of his death approaches, we are hoping the documentary does justice to the rapper’s legacy.
