Pepsi’s New Ad Teases The Weeknd’s Upcoming Performance at Super Bowl LV

The Weeknd had an incredible 2020, releasing After Hours and working to bring back the new wave, dream/synth pop that was popular in the 1980s. Although he saw major success last year, he got into some hot water with the Recording Academy (yes, the one that hosts The Grammy Awards). With the announcement of his performance at Super Bowl LV, the Recording Academy allegedly snubbed him, rescinding any possible awards due to his upcoming appearance at the Super Bowl. Despite denying these claims, fans did not buy it. This has not kept The Weeknd from being in high spirits, however, as evidenced by Pepsi’s new ad teasing his upcoming performance.

The Weeknd is scheduled to perform at this year’s Super Bowl, which falls on February 7th. It’s being held in Tampa Bay, FL. and, at the time of this article being written, the teams are undecided. Nevertheless, The Weeknd is set to perform during Halftime, something that the Canadian singer-songwriter has yet to do during his career.

In the 60 second commercial, people in various working environments are seen singing along to The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” track. This encompases how big the track was at the time of its release, as workers range from those in grocery stores, airport terminals and other locations. One of these workers is a security guard, who is visibly in awe when The Weeknd arrives at the stadium. He gives the guard a smile before driving off, cueing a cutaway to tease the upcoming event.

The commercial, although short, is a fun watch, and will get fans excited for The Weeknd’s upcoming performance. The appearance of “Blinding Lights” in the commercial is also fitting, as it peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With the sounds heard on After Hours, The Weeknd’s performance is bound to be something special.
