Polo G Taps His Chicago Roots On New “GNF (OKOKOK)” Track

Polo G has been a prominent figure among new-age rappers, helping to represent Chicago with his aggressively melodic bars. Although he’s mainly known for his melody, on the new “GNF (OKOKOK)” track, his Chicago roots take a front seat as he taps into Chicago’s (famous) aggressive drill sound.

Released on February 5th, the track is Polo G’s first 2021 appearance, following his appearance as a feature on Fivio Foreign’s 2020 single, “Bop It.” It comes in at just under two minutes, making sure not to give too much to the listeners. The beat is courtesy of WIZARDMCE & Varohl, who leave a light touch for Polo G. It takes a simpler approach than what the Chicago rapper usually goes with, primarily enlisting kicks and piano chords to create a strong foundation for him.

On “GNF (OKOKOK),” Polo G brings fans the classic drill sound that they know and love, rapping about gun violence and gang activity. The topic contrasts the rapper’s inflection on the chorus, which itself is juxtaposed by loud and angry background vocals that spill into both verses. This is not a flow we often hear from the Chicago native, but that does not take anything away from the track. In fact, it makes for bars that express how dangerous things can get with Polo G, while also showing that he is not a hothead. These bars seem to be punched in, which makes for a fun listening experience. Unfortunately, with the short runtime, it leaves the listener desiring much more.

Since the rapper’s bars are not extremely intricate or lengthy, the song leaves the listener feeling as if the track is unfinished, which is also partially due to its quick runtime. Polo G does dip his toes into a sound that he does not often utilize (as much as he should), so that’s great. Yet, due to its length, the listener can hardly enjoy the change in sound before it ends.

Hopefully, as we continue to see Polo G dive back into the realm of drill, his tracks will get lengthier. “GNF (OKOKOK)” sounds like a quick, drill freestyle—for some, that may seem like a step outside the box. Nevertheless, it still shows how versatile he can be without giving fans too much right off the bat. The simple production allows his aggressive bars to stand tall without too much support, giving them room to breathe.

“GNF (OKOKOK)” is a great track from Polo G, but it’s not anything incredibly groundbreaking. It sounds like an exciting single that will, hopefully, be followed by more drill-oriented music.
