Sneaker Review: Nike Freek Wrestling Shoes

Because streetwear is becoming more and more commonplace in society, tons of new hypebeasts are coming out of the woodwork. It seems as if everyone is getting their hands on the hottest Supreme or Off-White pieces, taking the notion of rarity away from them. Now that many folks are trying to dip into some of the most-hyped streetwear brands, it becomes even more important to keep sneaker collections unique and diverse. If you want to make sure your closet is distinct, you might want to get yourself a pair of Nike Freeks.

Although the sneaker is primarily intended to be a wrestling sneaker, a lace swap can easily take it from a shoe worn on the mat to a shoe worn everywhere. The lace pocket helps take attention away from the laces anyway, keeping them secure. The graphic on the lace pocket contrasts with the rest of the Nike Freek, bringing a unique look to the table.

Mesh makes up the base, while the suede lining is seen towards the front of the toe, melding into the rest of the sole. In the same area, white lace holders are seen keeping the laces tight. This makes for a nice design that allows the sneaker to be paired with a multitude of looks. Even though the Nike Freek is designed for wrestling, it still looks good with casual outfits, sweaters, hoodies, as well as most types of outerwear. When it comes to the design, the shoe is not slacking by any means! Wearability is another story.

There is no doubt that the Nike Freek fits a bit snug. Wrestling is an intense activity with not much room for error. The mesh base allows the foot to breathe and stretch out fairly nicely. Unfortunately, the mesh is only seen on the base of the shoe. This leads restrictive movement towards the ankle and upper foot. Although the Nike Freek keeps the foot secure, it also leads to discomfort. Since the shoe’s silhouette has a high top, there isn’t much articulation. The tongue further restricts articulation, even irritating the foot as it attempts to move around. This makes the shoe a struggle to walk in (after a while). If you plan on getting a pair, be prepared to take breaks in them.

The Nike Freek is a good shoe, but you need to be prepared to deal with a bit of discomfort. A size up is recommended if you want to keep the comfort up. We would rate the Nike Freek a 3.5/5. It is a good sneaker with a nice design, but the restrictions are a drawback. Either way, it’s still a nice pair to get your hands on.
