It feels as if rap has really been on the rise this year! While 2019 was a bit lackluster, 2020 already has drops from Chief Keef, Lil Baby, Young Nudy, and notably Lil Uzi Vert (among many other rappers). The release of Lil Uzi Vert’s long-awaited Eternal Atake caught many fans by surprise because he actually lived up to the precedent he set late last year, saying 2020 was going to be like 2016. Despite continuously pushing the album back as well as dealing with label issues, fans still love him! This could make you wonder, “what is the appeal of Lil Uzi Vert?”
The Philadelphia rapper has been in the hearts of fans since his breakout in 2016. Ever since the release of his hit song “Money Longer,” Uzi has been selling out shows and performing at some of the biggest festivals in the world. His fans love him, and for good reason. Lil Uzi Vert’s goofy, flamboyant personality has drawn many fans to his music, even dedicating “Protect Lil Uzi Vert at All Costs” compilations to him on YouTube. Not only can he hold his own when it comes to rapping, as shown by his latest two projects (Eternal Atake and LUV vs. The World 2), but he acts like the goofy, charming cartoon character that everyone loves. On his track “You Better Move,” he even raps about how “I live my life like a cartoon.”
Uzi definitely lives up to the line, giving fans his heart in every way, shape, and form. Not only has the Philly rapper consistently stood by his fans, going as far as allowing them to pick the album cover for Eternal Atake (as well as a majority of the tracklist on LUV vs. The World 2), but he even agreed to pay one of his fan’s college tuition. The fan came across Uzi while shopping at the mall and proceeded to ask him to pay for his college tuition, not expecting the rapper to pay him any mind. Instead, he agreed to pay for his $90,000 tuition, only under the condition that the fan complete school and provide Uzi with the necessary papers and transcripts to prove it. WOW!
If his personality isn’t enough to win fans over, Lil Uzi Vert definitely brings them in with his music. The special thing about his music is that it isn’t centered around lyricism and consciousness (like some of the other hip-hop greats), it’s focused on the energy it puts out. Each of his songs are intended to make the listener feel something. His fast, machine gun-like flow is paired with psychedelic, otherworldly trap beats manifesting a plethora of feelings and sounds.
“Money Longer” features upbeat production courtesy of Philadelphia producer and fellow producer Don Cannon. When coupled with bars about the life that comes with the money Uzi has, it gets the listener excited and ready to take on anything. On the other hand, tracks such as “Scott and Ramona” lament on the miscommunication and loss Lil Uzi has dealt with in his life. His heartfelt lyrics often make the listener empathize with him (some even being able to relate to what he is rapping about).
Although Lil Uzi Vert’s music does not express extremely complex lyricism and conscious messages, it still works its way into the ears (and hearts) of listeners because of the intention to exude a certain type of energy. His personality only adds to his appeal, and he’s not afraid to speak his mind. Every time he does so, he does it with confidence and exuberant energy, causing fans to fall deeper in love with his music. Lil Uzi Vert follows his heart no matter what, doing what he wants.
