There have been a number of artists reclaiming their status this year—think: Lil Uzi Vert, who released his long-awaited Eternal Atake album back in March. Another one of those artists is Big Sean, who—after three years—is gearing up to release his fifth studio album, Detroit 2.

Ever since he dropped I Decided in February 2017, fans have been waiting for Big Sean to release a follow-up. Over three years later, he is ready to release his album, Detroit 2. Detroit 2 is the follow-up to Detroit, released back in 2012. The sequel is scheduled to drop almost exactly eight years after Detroit, on September 4th. The album was initially rumored to release back in April alongside an expected Coachella appearance from Big Sean, but COVID-19 shot that idea down before it could come to fruition.

Although the album didn’t drop in April, Big Sean has been teasing it ever since he revealed the title on his birthday (back in March). After going through the recording process, he confirmed (via Twitter on August 23rd) that the album is finally complete. He also tweeted photos of himself in the studio, telling his followers that “I feel nothing but happy! Finally done recording #D2. Time for mixing.” The following day, he revealed the album art along with a pre-save link with a confirmation on the release date. Building on that momentum, he released “Deep Reverence” featuring the late Nipsey Hussle, which is expected to be on Detroit 2.

After three years, Big Sean is finally making his return with his fifth studio album, Detroit 2. He has been seen on tracks throughout the years—making brief appearances as a feature. Now, the Santa Monica native is reclaiming his position with a new album. Are you excited for Big Sean to drop Detroit 2, or would you rather another artist drop?
