Track Review: Lil Uzi Vert’s “Sasuke”

Lil Uzi Vert Sasuke Review

Lil Uzi Vert has been back on top this year, dropping both Eternal Atake and LUV vs. The World 2, back in March. Now, with the release of his new “Sasuke” single, he’s showing zero signs of letting up!

Following a fake beef with fellow rapper Playboi Carti, the Philadelphia rapper decided to release his new single. Unfortunately, it doesn’t bring quite the same punch as other tracks he released earlier this year.

Uzi dropped “Sasuke” on April 24th, and hyped it up to be one of his better tracks. Yet, after a few listens, it is somewhat of a letdown. The song starts off strong, as Uzi opens up with the chorus, during which he references Sasuke Uchiha (a character in the popular Shonen Jump manga, Naruto). Although it’s a bit repetitive, the chorus is still catchy and filled with Uzi’s layered vocals. He takes advantage of his fast “back-to-back” flow in the first half of the track, letting rounds out on the beat with his quick and hard bars. The cracks start to show fast, however, with some of Uzi’s bars becoming indiscernible and almost jumbled together (he is trying to go way too fast). Those same cracks only get worse as the track goes on.

Halfway through “Sasuke,” there is a noticeable change in his flow. Uzi tries to pull off Playboi Carti’s ‘baby flow,’ pitching his voice higher and slurring his speech in an attempt to achieve the same sound. Despite his efforts, the “baby voice” does not work for Uzi. In fact, it sounds like a failed attempt at trying to fuse the two sounds. It seems as if he does not realize it since he continues to do the voice for the rest of the track on top of lazier bars. The worst line in the song is when Uzi references a female saying, “she gone suck it up.” This just feels like a corny surface level bar. Unfortunately, he continues to rap the line over and over with little variation, quickly becoming a chore to listen to. Any spark that the track had is gone at this point, potentially getting the listener upset over what “Sasuke” could have been.

Lil Uzi Vert’s track “Sasuke” opened up with a ton of potential, but fell flat as it progressed. The bars got lazy and the lyrics got hazy! Since Uzi was, unfortunately, more focused on mimicking Playboi Carti’s baby voice instead of sticking with the flow that got him his name in the first place, “Sasuke” does not live up to expectations. We give this track a 6/10.
