Travis Scott and Kid Cudi have been cooking! Scott recently made an appearance on Nav’s track “Turks” alongside Gunna, while Cudi recently dropped “Leader of the Delinquents,” his first solo track in four years. With both rappers preparing for hot streaks, it’s only fitting that they teamed up for their new “THE SCOTTS” track.
“THE SCOTTS” initially debuted during the astronomical Travis Scott in-game Fortnite concert on April 23rd, dropping just a few hours later. Dark production starts the track off, courtesy of a star-studded team of producers, including Scott himself, Mike Dean, Dot da Genius, and Daytrip. The beat soon alternates into a soothing, synthetic version of itself, which becomes a pattern throughout the track and keeps the listener on their toes. Once the beat drops, Travis is all over it! As he raps about how “the Scotts” are running the game, he’s backed by Cudi’s signature hums, which work to plunge the listener deeper into the track.
As the song ushers into Cudi’s verse, you can tell his flow has changed. On “THE SCOTTS,” he doesn’t rap with his known, traditional style. In fact, he takes on a speed Travis would rap in and opts for fast, ‘one-two punch’ verses while backed by humming. Both of the rappers have nice verses, with Travis hopping on the track in a smooth fashion. Kid Cudi comes out swinging, rapping about the high life he lives and the fact that “I’m a hustler, I’m in business.” The two have a nice dynamic, with Travis keeping his cool and Cudi letting loose.
The track really shines with its production, which is a ride from start to finish. It’s so intricate that you almost don’t want to stop listening. The outro is very pleasing, taking the initial beat and completely synthesizes it, layering it over itself to create a sound that is intensely psychedelic, and even a bit haunting. The outro ties the track together, being a climactic ending to an already incredible song. The only gripe with “THE SCOTTS” is the length of each verse. It would have also been nice to hear Cudi and Scott go bar-for-bar with one another, but the fact that they even collaborated is enough!
“THE SCOTTS” is a great track, with Travis Scott and Kid Cudi teaming up and bringing the heat along with them (the two have always been a nice duo). Reportedly, there’s even a collab project on the way! “THE SCOTTS” comes in at 9/10.
