Tyler, the Creator’s “LUMBERJACK” Shines

Tyler, the Creator is absolutely a veteran in music; he transitioned from just a rapper to an overall artist a long time ago. It’s hard to hold him in a box since his sound pulls in elements from a vast number of different genres.

His “LUMBERJACK” single dropped right before the Call Me If You Get Lost album release, catching fans by surprise (it hit streaming services without any preluding announcements). The production is reminiscent of the rapper’s third studio album, Wolf, with strong drums and cymbals complimented by slightly sinister synths.

The track opens with Tyler recounting moments where his mother expressed her pride and love for him. This is accompanied by narration from DJ Drama, setting the stage for Tyler to give fans a short and sweet performance, with an emphasis on short due to the 2:18 runtime. He brings the bars on this track, showcasing his lyrical ability while taking a look back at his past and how much he has evolved. He doesn’t pass up the opportunity to flex, either, rapping about how he’s an “MSG sellout” and how he’s got “whips on whips.” Within the short runtime, he is able to pat himself on the back for all of his accomplishments while still showing he’s got some work to do. This is a reminder that despite his shift in sound, he can still hold his own among other artists.

This is a great track that shows Tyler can still hang with the best in the rap industry, all within a 2:18 performance. Unfortunately, the short runtime might leave some listener desiring more bars, which now they can get on Call Me If You Get Lost.
